Lamar Adds Three More Conference Titles

HOUSTON, Texas - The Lamar University men scored 113 points to record their best outdoor finish since 1986 as both the Cardinal men and women finished second place on the final day of the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships. The Cardinals won three more individual titles Saturday as the women scored 117.5, trailing only to Northwestern State while the LU men fell to only Stephen F. Austin.

Throughout the meet, Lamar totaled 19 medals, including six golds, six silvers, and seven bronzes. Anthony Oliver (hammer), Thomas Knoop (javelin), Elijah Jackson (high jump), and Cameron Chin (400m) won on the men's side while Neelie Schiel (javelin) and Kayli Johnson (100-meter hurdles) brought home titles for the women. In addition, LU had 22 all-conference nods from 16 athletes (nine women, seven men).

Early on, Jackson cleared eight rounds to reach the 2.13-meter mark (6-11.75) in the high jump, which helped get him the gold medal over Stephen F. Austin's Austin Murphy. This was his third career conference medal. Chin earned his first-ever conference title by taking the men's 400m with a personal-best of 46.53.

Johnson earned three medals on the day. She took home gold in the women's 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.62. Then, she added two bronzes in the triple jump (12.53m; 41-1.50) and the women's 4x100m (45.22) after teaming up with Ahmasia Brown, Chantell Bowman, and Kayla Smith. After winning gold in the hammer throw Thursday, Oliver placed second in the men's discus with a mark of 48.41m (158-10).

LU's distance members contributed five medals. Freddy Richardson (3:52.61) came within four-tenths of winning the men's 1,500m. Later, he finished third in the men's 5,000m with a time of 14:42.32. Also earning two medals was Inca Padfield, who collected a silver in the women's 5,000m (17:11.06) and a bronze in the women's 1,500m (4:29.52). Luke Parker ran third in the finals of the men's 800m, crossing the line at 1:51.05.
