Box Score BEAUMONT, Texas – Abilene Christian defeated Lamar University, 6-1, Friday afternoon at the Thompson Family Tennis Center in a match that was far closer than the final score would indicate. Friday's contest saw three singles courts go to a third set, but all three matches went against LU.
Lamar's duo of
Fabian Anthin and
Guy Dagan recorded a 6-3 victory over ACU's Daniel Morozov and Merse Deli, but the Cardinals were unable to come up with another doubles win to save the point.
As the two teams made the transition to singles, the Cardinals took the first set on two of the six courts. Courts 1 and 5 saw the Cardinals (9-7) battle back from opening set losses to tie things up at a set a piece.
Sophomore Steffano Chappuis would take a hard-fought opening set on court 4 over Abilene Christian's Martin Delnido, 7-6 (7-4) for the early lead. The opening-set victory knocked the wind out of the Wildcats' No. 4 player as Chappuis didn't let up in the second set. Unfortunately, the Cardinals (9-7) were unable to rally behind Chappuis as ACU took the remaining matches for the final score.
The Cardinals will be back in action Sunday as they host UT Arlington. The match against the Mavericks is set for an 11 a.m. start from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
