Cardinals Sweep Doubleheader

| By:
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University men's tennis team swept a doubleheader from Prairie View A&M Friday afternoon winning both matches by a combined 11-0 score. The Cardinals won the opening match, 7-0 and came back in the second to take a 4-0 victory in the clinch-clinch format.

The wins move the Cardinals to 13-8 (.619) on the season and serve as the final tune-up for the Red and White before the start of Southland Conference play.

The Cardinals used the same formula in both matches for the wins. Jump out to an early lead then take control in singles. Lamar won five of the six doubles matches with the lone exception coming in the second match when court 2 was stopped after LU grabbed the point (but LU held a 5-2 lead in that match).

The Cardinals extended the lead with straight-set victories from Guy Dagan (No. 5 singles) and Santiago Ledesma (No. 6). In those two matches, Lamar surrendered just one game in the four sets. On the day, the Cardinals posted 10 shutout sets and 17 where they surrendered one or fewer games.

The Cardinals got the clinching victory in the first match from sophomore Leon Nickel who defeated Prairie View A&M's Eduardo Nunez del Prado, 6-0, 6-1.

The final two courts of the first overall match went to a third set with Lamar's Fabian Anthin (court 2) and Louis Drapeau (court 3) claiming a super tiebreak victory for the final score.

Big Red again jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the afternoon match and again used the lower part of the order to extend the lead. Ledesma recorded two shutouts sets to defeat PVAMU's Ryan Boone, 6-0, 6-0, for the second point while Dagan put LU on the cusp of another team win with his straight-sets decision on court 5. Sophomore Stefano Chappuis closed out the day when he defeated the Panthers' Tafari Dudley, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3 singles.

The Cardinals now turn their attention to Saturday, Mar. 29th, when they open conference play against the league's other Cardinals – UIW. The SLC opener is set for an 11 a.m. start in San Antonio.
