Corpus Christi, Texas – Lamar University closed out its opening fall tournament Sunday with more wins as the Cardinals are now under way in the 2024-25 season.
Freshman
Lukas Hamacher closed out his first collegiate tournament with another win taking the Orange Flight consolation match. He defeated UT Rio Grande Valley's Loic Young, 4-6, 6-1, 10-5. Sophomore
Stefano Chappuis followed suit in the Yellow Flight consolation match with a straight-sets decision over Sergey Haug (UTSA), 6-0, 6-0.
Leon Nickel faced Abilene Christian's Martin Delindo in the Blue Flight consolation match but dropped a heartbreaking three-set match. Nickel took the opening set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-3), only to see Delindo battle back to post 7-5, 10-8 decisions for the win. It was a similar outcome from
Haruki Omori-Cowie who also dropped a three-set match to Rice's Eduardo Morais, 6-3, 3-6, 10-8.
Unfortunately, the Cardinal duo of Nickel and
Fabian Anthin – who were competing for the championship of the top doubles flight – came up just short falling to Ethan Scribner and Benjamin McDonald (ACU) Sunday, 6-4.
The Cardinals return to action Friday, Sept. 20 when they travel to Thiboduax, La. for the Battle on the Bayou.
