CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Lamar University posted two doubles wins and the duo of
Leon Nickel and
Fabian Anthin advanced to the Flight Blue Championship after a strong second day of competition at the Jack Frederick Memorial Islander Open Saturday in Corpus Christi.
Nickel and Anthin squared off against Abilene Christian's Matheus Lima and Daniel Linkuns-Morozov and posted a 6-3 victory to advance. LU's duo will take on ACU's Ethan Scribner and Ben McDonald in the flight championship Sunday.
In singles competition, Nickel returned to the court to face UIW's Emilio Vila. The match went to a third with Nickel advancing, 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 10-8. Nickel will face ACU's Martin Delindo in Sunday's Blue Flight Consolation match.
Big Red's other win came from
Haruki Omori-Cowie in the Red Flight Consolation bracket. Omori-Cowie defeated UT Rio Grande Valley's Same Whitehead in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Omori-Cowie will take on Rice's Eduardo Morais in Sunday's consolation final.
The final day of competition begins Sunday with doubles at 9 a.m. followed by singles at 10 a.m.
