BEAUMONT, Texas – The Ron Wesbrooks Invitational has become a tennis tradition, and the Lamar University men's tennis team took advantage of their lone home fall tournament by picking up five opening-day victories, including three on the singles courts.
Lamar's
Fabian Anthin,
Stefano Chappuis and
Guy Dagan each picked up wins on the singles courts, but Anthin and Chappuis had to put in a little extra work to the get the W.
Anthin squared off against Rice's Yair Sarouk and picked up a hard-fought tiebreak victory in the opening set, but Sarouk rebounded in the second to force a super tiebreak. Anthin prevailed, 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 10-6. It was a similar story for Chappuis who defeated Abilene Christian's Ethan Scribner. The only different was this match saw Chappuis have to battle back from an opening-set loss. Chappuis prevailed over Scribner, 4-6, 7-5, 11-9.
Newcomer
Guy Dagan picked up his singles win in the fourth flight in straights sets defeating ACU's Ford Elizondo, 6-1, 6-3.
Lamar's doubles wins were recorded by the team of Dagan and
Haruki Omori-Cowie and Chappuis and
Lukas Hamacher.
The second day of action is set to get under way at 9 a.m. Saturday. All matches will be played at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
