Tennis Adds International Standouts to Roster

BEAUMONT, Texas – Stefano Chappuis (Lima, Peru) and Leon Nickel (Winnenden, Germany) have signed National Letters of Intent to continue their education and play tennis for Lamar University announced head coach Scott Shankles Friday morning.
 
Leon NickelBoth signees are lefthanded players and are highly ranked athletes from their respective countries. The two new additions to the Cardinals roster will should add punch in both the singles and doubles lineup.
 
Chappuis arrives in the Golden Triangle as the fourth highest-ranked player in his native Peru. A standout in the classroom, Stefano is ranked among the top 1,000 players in the world according to the ITF.
 
Currently ranked No. 270 in Germany, Nickel has risen nearly 400 spots in the rankings in the just the last year alone. During his junior playing career, Nickel has guided his Wuirtemberg team to three championship titles runs.
 
Nickel will be the fourth German on the Cardinals 2023-24 roster.
 
The two latest addition are coming at the perfect time for Shankles' squad. While the Cardinals lost only one senior from its 2022-23 roster, senior to-be Brandon Do is entering his final year of eligibility.
