Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Lamar University recorded a huge Southland Conference road win Saturday behind a strong doubles performance. LU took the doubles point and split the six singles matches to record a 4-3 victory at UIW Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals were overwhelming in doubles competition taking all three matches. The Cardinals won those matches surrendering a total of six games combined between the three matches.
It was a different story in singles as it was a close battle on all six courts with four of the matches coming down to a third set.
It was a 2-0 lead before UIW could get on the scoreboard after
Max Amling picked up a straight-sets victory at No. 1 singles. UIW finally scored with a victory at No. 5 singles, but sophomore
Haruki Omori-Cowie got the Cardinals back in the scoring column with a three-set victory over UIW's Noah De Luna, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. With Omori-Cowie's victory in hand, the Cardinals needed just one more win to take the overall team win. LU (10-10/2-2 SLC) didn't have to wait long for that decision.
After UIW momentarily cut the lead back to a single point the Cards got the clinching point to put the match away. LU's
Max Milic took a straight-sets decision, 6-4, 6-3, over Jose Garmendia for the clincher. UIW closed out the day with the final singles victory but it didn't change the outcome.
The Cardinals will look to close out the 2023 regular season Friday, April 14
th against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The match against the Islanders will begin at 3 p.m. from the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center.
