HOUSTON, Texas - Sitting outside of the top 15 entering the final round of the University of Houston's All-American Intercollegiate, the Lamar University men's golf team would climb up two more spots to finish 14th in a 21-team tournament that featured six nationally ranked teams and six nationally ranked players. With their lowest round of 293 today along with the totals of 297 and 302, the Cardinals earned a three-round total of 892 strokes.
While
Carl Hardin was unable to gain more ground from yesterday, he still finished as LU's top golfer overall taking a tie for 27th with 220 strokes (73-71-76). This put him one stroke behind two of the top 100 golfers in the nation in Will Hopkins (No. 59; Kansas State) and Jiri Zuska (No. 100; Louisville), who both respectively tied for 21st.
Hugo Hellman saw a big improvement following two 78's as he racked up 69 strokes thanks to a five-birdie performance. With 225 strokes, this earned him a tie for 53rd along with teammate
Guillermo Estivill (74-75-76). Another player who improved in this round was
Jacob Lindh, who finished tied for 68th (228 strokes) following an even-par 72 to go along with the 76 and 80 from the previous day.
Pedro Marin would tie for 102nd after his three-round total of 237 strokes (74-78-85).
There was also an individual portion of the tournament that included two other Cardinals.
Vincent Koppitsch finished 20th with two 78s and a 75 for 231 strokes while
David Schneider Jerez claimed 26th with 238 strokes (81-78-79).
With all nationally-ranked teams in the top 10, it was No. 29 Ole Miss that won the team title by four strokes over No. 14 Tennessee and No 36 Louisville. Jake Hall (UT) would finish first overall by one stroke over Ole Miss's Hugo Townsend. As for the other individual circuit, Brett Schell (Ole Miss) won that portion by three strokes.
Although LU will next be competing in another UH-hosted event next week, that tournament will take place in Palm City, Fla., beginning Monday, the 27th.
