HOUSTON, Texas - Ignited by two under-par rounds from
Hugo Hellman, Lamar University's men's golf team find themselves sitting tied for third at 567 strokes (283-281) along with the University of Houston. LU trails overall leader Sam Houston by nine strokes.
Hellman had a great showing in the first 36 holes. He began with six birdies and three bogeys in round one to shoot 69. After three bogeys and birdies in the front nine of round two canceled each other out, Hellman caught fire with five birdies on the back nine including four straight on holes 10-13. With a 67 in the second round, he finds himself at 136 strokes, one back of the leader Bret Gray of SHSU.
Jacob Lindh posted an even-par 72 in round one followed by a two-under 70 in round two for 142 strokes to be tied for 16th. Like Lindh,
Carl Hardin also had an even-par 72 in the first round only to have a 73 for 145 strokes and a tie for 30th. Three strokes and 19 spots back of Hardin is
Guillermo Estivill (71-77=148) while
Pedro Marin sits tied for 71st with 152 strokes (79-73).
"We had a solid day overall," said head coach
Jessie Mudd. "There are a few things we can clean up, but the guys played well. Looking forward to getting out tomorrow and putting up another good round."
Hellman will look to claim the individual title tomorrow while the rest of the Cardinals will try to make up ground in the third and final round of the tournament.
