Cards Split Doubleheader

| By:
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 STILLWATER, Okla. – Lamar University traveled to Stillwater, Okla., Saturday for a two-day stretch that will see the Cardinals play three matches in two days. The Cards opened that three-match stretch with a doubleheader Saturday. LU dropped the opening match of the day to Omaha, 4-0, but battled back to defeat Oral Roberts, 5-2 in the second.

Coming off the setback to Omaha, the Cardinals quickly reset for ORU and came out on fire. The Cardinals swept all three doubles matches for the first point. Sophomore Max Amling held the momentum at No. 1 singles defeating ORU's Gustavo Pinho, 7-5, 6-2.

After Amling put the Cardinals in the driver's seat, senior Filippo Salsini helped the Red and White take a commanding lead. Salsini defeated the Golden Eagles' Eli Brewer, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 5 singles to give LU a 3-0 lead.

Up by three, the Cardinals needed just one more win on the four remaining courts, and the Cardinals wouldn't have to wait long for the clinching point. Freshman Max Milic put the match away with a straight-sets victory on court 6. Milic had to go to a tiebreak in the second set but took the extra frame in dominant fashion, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) over Ricardo Filho.

The Mavericks jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the opening match by taking the doubles point with wins on courts 2 and 3. Omaha held the momentum through the transition to singles after taking the first set on all six singles courts.

The Mavericks turned the first-set victories into team points taking the first two singles matches to build a 3-0 advantage. Unfortunately, the Cardinals were unable to break through in singles as Omaha was able to take the first three singles matches for the 4-0 victory.

The Cardinals return to action Sunday when they take on Oklahoma State. The match against the Cowboys is set to begin at 11 a.m. from the Greenwood Tennis Center.
