BEAUMONT, Texas – It's going to be a busy three days for the Lamar University men's tennis team as they head north for four matches in three days. The three-day trip will cover matches at Arkansas (Friday), vs. Omaha (Saturday), vs. Oral Roberts (Saturday) and at Oklahoma State (Sunday). Big Red will be in Fayetteville, Ark., Friday before making the trip to Stillwater, Okla., Saturday for the final three matches.
The Cardinals (2-1) got out to a strong start last week sweeping a doubleheader against Prairie View A&M before falling the next day at No. 11 Baylor.
The Razorbacks are 2-0 after opening the year with consecutive road victories over San Diego State and UC San Diego, while Saturday match against LU will serve as the spring season opener for Omaha. Oral Roberts open their season earlier this week with a one-point loss at UT Rio Grande Valley, but will face Montana in Tulsa before taking on the Cardinals. Oklahoma State also kicked off its season last week against UTRGV winning both ends of a doubleheader, 7-0. The Cowboys will taking on Omaha before hosting Big Red Sunday morning.
The Cardinals have a strong history against all four upcoming opponents in recent years. LU is 1-3 all-time against Arkansas, with that victory coming in the first meeting between the two schools, unfortunately the Hogs have won that last three matches by a combined 23-0 score.
Big Red is 2-1 all-time against Omaha, but the lone loss in series history came the last time the two met on the court. That meeting came in 2018 in Beaumont. Saturday will be the second time the two schools have played on a neutral site.
The Cardinals have squared off against Oral Roberts more than any of the other three school due to ORU's time in the Southland. Big Red holds a 12-4 advantage in the series which dates back to the 1972 season. Saturday will mark the fourth time the two schools have met on a neutral site with LU holding a 3-0 advantage in the matches.
The Cardinals are 0-8 all-time against OSU. Sunday's match will mark the third time in the past four years the two schools have met with all of those contests being played in Stillwater.
Friday's matche against Arkansas will get under way at 4 p.m. LU will then face Omaha Saturday at 10 a.m., before returning the court that afternoon to face ORU. The Cardinals close out the weekend with an 11 match at Oklahoma State.
