Cards Win Season-Opening Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The defending conference champion Lamar University men's tennis team opened defense of its title Saturday in a doubleheader at Prairie View A&M. The Cardinals took both matches by identical 6-1 scores.

The Cardinals took the lead in doubles in both matches. After getting the early lead in the first match, the Cardinals turned things over to their depth in the singles lineup. Despite the fact both teams switched up their lineups for the two matches, it was the bottom half of the Cardinals lineup that extended the lead.

Sophomore Haruki Omori-Cowie gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead with his straight sets victory at court No. 5. Freshman Gustav Hasslegren followed suit at No. 3 singles surrendering just one game in two sets to take a 3-0 lead.

Once the Cardinals gained the advantage they never let their opponent back into the match suffering just one defeat (a three-setter) at No. 2 singles.

Almost like a mirror image of the first set, Big Red took a 1-0 lead and then turned to the bottom half of the lineup to extend the lead. This time it was sophomore, and Port Neches-Groves product Jonah Smith giving LU a 2-0 lead with a shutout at court No. 5. Freshman Max Milic gave Big Red an insurmountable lead with a shutout victory on court three. Big Red sealed the win, and the doubleheader, by taking the next two victories giving up just one loss on the day (court one).

The Cardinals return to action Sunday when they travel to Waco, Texas to take on Baylor. The match against the Bears will begin at 11 a.m.
