FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - As the last of the four Lamar University Cardinals track and field athletes to compete in the NCAA West Regionals,
Yasmin Austridge sought to end LU's week in Fayetteville on a high note.
Austridge participated in the 3000-meter steeplechase against 46 other competitors from across the nation. After running the first half lap at 40.67 seconds, the native of London, England would wind up finishing the race by clocking in with a time of 11:00.49. This was enough for 14th place in her heat and 44th place overall.
This season has proven to be Austridge's finest, which included a school record of 10:14.93 seconds in this event at the Joe Walker Invitational and a conference title in 1500m in the Western Athletic Conference championships.
"Although I'm gutted with my performance today, I'm proud of my outdoor season as a whole," said Austridge. "My teammates have made this season so enjoyable, and I appreciate their constant support! Massive thank you to Coach Sweeney for all of his guidance this season."
Austridge's coaches could not have been more proud of the effort she put in this season. "It's been a pleasure watching Yaz blossom this season into one of the best runners in the NCAA," said assistant coach
Andrew Sweeney. "She's gained a ton of valuable experience in her first year at Lamar, and I'm proud of all that she's accomplished. Things didn't end up how we were hoping today, but I know she's going to do some really special things next year."
While Austridge is done for the season, LU's 2022 outdoor season is not as they will be represented in one final event. In two weeks,
Kenson Tate will fly to Eugene, Ore., to partake in the NCAA Outdoor Championship Finals in the long jump event after qualifying in these regionals. The finals will begin on June 8th.
