BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University has earned six All-Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field honors from five athletes announced by league officials Wednesday afternoon. Highlighting this group was junior
Ashton Rainey, who received multiple all-conference awards.
The SLC Indoor Track & Field superlative awards are nominated and voted upon by the league's head coaches. Voting for a school's own athlete was not permitted. All-conference recognition is given to the first, second and third-place finishers in each championship event final.
Rainey (Ocean Spring, Miss.) earned a second-team honor in the 5,000 meters (16:34.69) and a third-team honor in the 3,000 meters with a personal best time of 9:44.12 at the SLC Indoor Championships. This season, she broke the school's 5,000m record (16:17.81) at Boston University's David Hemery Valentine Invitational.
Sophomore
Kyndall Drones (Pearland, Texas) is a third-team honoree in the women's weight throw. She broke two school records in both the weight throw (17.94m/58-10.25) and the shot put (14.51m/47-7.25) at the University of Houston's Howie Ryan Invitational.
Senior
Ke'Asia Hall (Nederland, Texas) notched her first career all-conference honor as a second-teamer in the women's triple jump. She finished with a career-best distance of 12.33m (40-5.5), which was a mere six inches behind first place.
Junior
John Sanderson (Hamshire, Texas; 60-meter hurdles) and sophomore
Luke Parker (South Yorkshire, England; 800m) were both named as second teamers in their respective events. Sanderson had previously made history by becoming the first Cardinal to break eight seconds at the Robert Platt Invitational (7.86).
The Cardinals won six medals (four silver, two bronze) at the conference championship meet. Both teams finished sixth overall, with the men scoring 49 points, while the women had 53.
LU will begin its outdoor season Saturday, March 28
th, as it will head to Prairie View A&M to compete in the Panthers' home meet.
