BEAUMONT, Texas – Just a week after locking up their first Western Athletic Conference title in program history, the Lamar University men's tennis team will have one final tune-up to get ready for the WAC Championships next week (April 22-24 at the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Complex). Big Red will close out the regular season Saturday against UTSA.
The Cardinals caught fire midway through the season and never looked back responding to a three-match skid by winning their next eight matches, including an undefeated run through conference play to earn their first Western Athletic Conference regular-season championship.
During that stretch, the Cardinals have won matches on both ends of the spectrum. Big Red has been pushed to the limit winning two one-point contests, but they have also taken several lopsided decisions including a shutout to go along with four 6-1 victories.
Saturday will also serve as the regular-season finale for UTSA (10-11) as well. The Roadrunners look to put an end to a tough stretch that has seen them drop consecutive matches and four of the last five.
The Cardinals have struggled historically against UTSA. LU is 4-26 (.133) all-time in a series that dates back to 1987. The Cardinals won the first match in the series and has recorded two victories in the last five outings, but UTSA comes to Beaumont winners of three straight.
Saturday's match is slated to begin at 11 a.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
