BEAUMONT, Texas – Co-leaders in the Western Athletic Conference standings, the Lamar University men's tennis team (12-6) will take a break from conference action this week to face Prairie View A&M in a doubleheader.
The Cardinals enter the week riding some momentum rattling off four consecutive wins. Big Red is coming off a week where they outscored their opponents 11-3 in two matches, played six three-set matches and had three sets go to a tiebreak. The Cardinals' efforts on the court were so impressive that the freshmen duo of
Daniel Sancho Arbizu and
Juan Jose Rodriguez were named WAC Doubles Players of the Week.
Prairie View enters the week after a tough start to the season. The Panthers are 2-19 (.095) on the year, but one of those two wins has come in their last three matches, a 4-0 decision over Mississippi Valley State. The Panthers make their way to Beaumont after dropping consecutive matches to Oral Roberts and Texas A&M.
The all-time series between the two schools dates back to the 1986 season and is one that has been dominated by LU. The Cardinals are 23-1 all-time against PVAMU, a mark that includes a perfect 12-0 record in Beaumont. The Panthers' lone victory in the series was a one-point decision during the 2006 season in a neutral-sited match. Big Red has since rattled off 18 straight wins in the series.
Friday's doubleheader will begin at 11 a.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center. The second match is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
