HOUSTON, Texas - Rejoined by their teammates from the Texas Relays, Lamar University's track and field teams all ran in the Victor Lopez Classic hosted by Rice University. Including four first place finishes, the Cardinals produced a remarkable 14 top three finishes.
LU's three first places finishes were
Sydne Porter in the 200-meter dash,
Yasmin Austridge in the 1500-meter run, and the men's and women's 4x400m relay teams. Porter's time of 24.17 was not only her personal best, but .29 seconds faster than the second place finisher. Austridge was a full seven seconds ahead of second place with a time of 4:26.09, which was one of the fastest times early this season.
The men's 4x400m 'A' team of
Derrick Brooks,
Antonio Muñoz ,
Jaylon Roberts, and
Brian Raven. finished with a time of 3:15.05Â led by a 46.9 split from Roberts. Meanwhile the 'B' team of
Cameron Chretien,
R'kel Collins, Robine Lane and
Webster Slaughter was third at 3:19.84. On the women's circuit,
Parl Eelma,
Faith Outing,
Adebola Odunlami, and
Chloe Rodriguez clocked in 3:49.28 seconds to claim their 4x400m win. Outing opened the race with a 55 second split and Rodriguez timed in 56 seconds on the anchor leg.
Zkykirra Cabarras earned second place in the women's 100-meter dash with 12.35 seconds. This was four-tenths off the overall winner. In the hurdles portions,
Kayli Johnson recorded a 14.61 time that placed her third.
Declan Neary was in second place in the men's 1500 meters with 3:51.78 while three spots behind was
Eli Peveto (3:55.82).
The men's 400-meter dash would see five members reach the top 10.
Jaylon Roberts clocked in 47.33 seconds for second. Brooks was fourth with 49.67 seconds besting teammates Raven (5th; 49.80), Antonio Munoz (6th; 49.91) by .13 and .24 seconds respectively. Collins (51.18) would place ninth. On the women's circuit, Outing (3rd; 55.65) and Rodriguez (5th; 57.10) finished in the top five.
The field events would see four top three finishes. Eelma's 37.24m in the javelin throw earned her second place.
Kenson Tate (7.37m) and
Patrick Wolf (7.35m) took second and third respectively in the men's long jump while
Arajanee Jackson was second in the women's triple jump leaping 12.06m setting a new personal record outdoors.
LU will get next week off before preparing to run in the Cowboy Relays in Lake Charles, La., on April 9th.
