Cardinals Go In Search of Southland Title
BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University's recent three-match win streak has placed the Cardinals in a position of playing for a share of the Southland Conference title Thursday when they travel to Corpus Christi, Texas to face rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Cardinals recent run has seen victories over Nicholls, UIW and a thrilling 4-3 decision over then undefeated and first-place New Orleans. Big Red has moved from fourth in the league standings to all alone in second place just a game back of A&M-Corpus Christi. The Cardinals are also just a game up on UNO in the standings.
Thursday's match will serve as the regular-season finale for the Red and White, as the following match – a non-conference tilt against Southern Mississippi has been canceled (the match was originally scheduled to be played earlier in the season but was postponed due to positive COVID test results on the Southern Miss team).
The Islanders are 15-4 (.789) on the season and have won three straight after a stretch that saw them drop three of four. The Islanders are coming off a tough five match road swing that saw them go 3-2 (.600) in the five matches. A&M-Corpus Christi will host UIW Wednesday before playing the Cardinals.
History has not been on LU's side in the series. The Cardinals are 4-24 (.143) all-time in the series (a record that includes a 1-10 mark in Corpus Christi), but the four wins have all come under the direction of head coach
Scott Shankles. The two teams have split the previous four meetings, and the Cardinals have won of the last seven matchups.
Thursday's contest will also determine seeding for the Southland Conference Tennis Championships which will take place in Beaumont April 23 – 25 from the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center.
