Cardinals Struggle at UTSA

| By:
Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Lamar University had to battle Mother Nature and UTSA Sunday afternoon and it proved to be too much to overcome as the Cardinals took the court for doubles in 20 mile per hour winds. UTSA defeated the Cardinals, 4-0.

"It was some very tough conditions this afternoon, but we fought hard," said LU head coach Scott Shankles. "I think matches like this can be a good thing every once in a while, because it tests your mental fortitude. I think our guys passed the test. We feel good about heading into conference play."

The Cardinals picked up a victory at No. 2 doubles from the team of Carlos Paton Canal and Joshua Sundaram to give both teams a victory, but UTSA got the point after taking the match on court one.

Despite the fact the Cardinals were shutout, each individual match in singles was coming right down to the wire as there were three three-set matches and a match that had to go to a tiebreak in the first set.

The Roadrunners took the first two matches in singles – straight sets – to take a 3-0 lead. With their backs against the wall, the Cardinals were trying to battle back forcing the matches on courts 4 – 6 to a third set, while sophomore Axel Vila Antuna was tied for 4-4 in the second (but down a set).

Unfortunately, Big Red couldn't get the ball to bounce their way as UTSA picked up a three-set victory at No. 4 singles.

The Cardinals return to action Thursday when they host Abilene Christian to open Southland Conference play. The match will begin at 3 p.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
