BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women's tennis team returns to action Sunday when they travel to Abilene Christian to take on the Wildcats. That match was supposed to be the second of a two-match road swing for the Cardinals this week, but as we've all become accustomed to in this COVID athletics season schedules can change in an instant.
The Cardinals were planning on opening the week Friday with a match at UIW, but that contest was postponed due to positive COVID test results and subsequent contact tracing on the UIW team. The setback marks the second consecutive match for LU that has either been postponed or canceled due to weather or COVID (at UL Lafayette on Mar. 17
th).
The Cardinals (7-4/4-2 SLC) will now turn their attention to the ACU. Big Red is currently tied for fifth in the league standings (with their next opponent ACU), just a game back of Central Arkansas in the standings. LU has won three of its past four outings and is coming off a thrilling 4-3 victory over Stephen F. Austin that saw Big Red win the final two matches in three sets for the decision.
ACU enters the weekend match with a 9-9 (.500) overall record and 4-2 in league play but will host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi before facing the Cardinals. The Wildcats have split their last four decisions and are coming off a 6-1 victory over Nicholls.
The Wildcats have had the upper hand in the series, but Sunday's contest will be just the 11
th matchup all-time between the two schools. ACU leads the series, 8-2 (.800), including a 5-0 record in Abilene. The Wildcats have won seven straight in the series.
Sunday's match is slated to begin at 11 a.m. from the John T.L. Jones Tennis Complex.
