BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University men's tennis team will be in San Antonio, Texas Sunday to face former Southland Conference foe, UTSA, in their final warm up before the start of the conference schedule. Although it is LU's final non-conference contest before the beginning of league play it is not the team's final non-conference match as the Cardinals will host Southern Mississippi Saturday, April 17
th.
The Cardinals (7-5/.583) will look to return to their winning was after a tough three-match stretch. After opening the year with consecutive losses, the Cardinals rattled off seven consecutive wins before dropping their previous three contests – a stretch that included SMU, UT Arlington and No. 3 Baylor (in Beaumont).
UTSA heads into the showdown playing some of their best tennis of the season. The Roadrunners are 10-5 (.667) on the season having won three straight and four of the last five. In their current three-match win streak, the 'Runners have outscored their opponents, 12-1. The lone loss during their previous five matches has been to No. 41 Wichita State. UTSA will host No. 29 South Florida Friday before squaring off against the Cardinals.
The Roadrunners hold an impressive 25-4 (.862) all-time record in the series, with the majority of those decisions coming when UTSA was still a member of the Southland Conference. Big Red is looking for its first victory against UTSA in San Antonio (0-11). The two teams have split the past four meetings with LU picking up wins in 2016 and 2017 and UTSA recording wins in 2018 and 2019. The two did not face each other in the COVID shortened 2020 season.
The match against UTSA will begin at 11 a.m. from the UTSA Tennis Center.
