BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University men's tennis team (7-4) will welcome nationally ranked Baylor to the Thompson Family Tennis Center Monday afternoon, in what will be a rematch from earlier this season.
The Cardinals enter the match with the Bears coming off a tough run, having dropped results against instate rivals SMU and UT Arlington in their last two outings. Monday's match up will be no easier as the Cardinals will be facing their highest-rated opponent of the season (Baylor was ranked 15
th in the first meeting). The Cardinals had enjoyed an impressive run of form which had seen them push a win streak to a season-best seven before dropping their last two matches.
The Bears enter Monday's match up with a 19-3 (.864) overall record and have won three straight and eight of their last nine, with the lone loss during that stretch being a one-point setback to Texas A&M.
The Bears collected their seventh ranked win of the season on Mar. 17, defeating No. 15 Arizona 5-2 at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center. The Bears boast a combined 82-16 record in singles action this year and a collective 39-15 doubles mark. Baylor's form in singles and doubles means the Bears command an impressive .796 winning percentage across all contests.
History has not been favorable to the Cardinals in the series. Big Red trails the all-time series, 12-5, and has recorded 10 consecutive losses in the series. The last LU victory was a one-point decision which came in 1984. Monday will be the first time the two programs have met in Beaumont.
The match is slated to begin at 2 p.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
