BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University men's tennis team returns to action Thursday when they travel to Prairie View, Texas, to take on the Prairie View A&M Panthers in a doubleheader. The matches against PVAMU will close out a four-match road swing to open the 2021 season. The first match will get under way at 11 a.m., followed by the second at 2 p.m.
The Cardinals (0-2) enter the week looking for their first win of the season after consecutive losses to No. 15 Baylor and a very tough Rice team on its home court. Big Red will be facing an opponent in a similar situation, as the Panthers are 0-4 on the year after dropping consecutive doubleheaders at SMU and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. PVAMU was scheduled to face Rice this past Sunday but that match was canceled due to a weather delay which pushed the start of the LU-Rice match back four hours.
The series between the two schools has been heavily in favor of the Red and White. The Cardinals hold a 21-1 (.955) all-time record over Prairie View A&M, which includes an 8-1 (.889) mark in Prairie View. The Cardinals' lone loss in the series came during the 2006 season. The Cardinals won both meetings between the two schools last year – a doubleheader in Beaumont. Big Red has surrendered a total of one point to the Panthers in the previous five matches.
Following the doubleheader against PVAMU, the Cardinals will return home to open a four-match homestand beginning Friday, Feb. 5
st, against UT Rio Grande Valley. The Cardinals homestand will include dates against the Vaqueros, Southern Mississippi and Alcorn State.
