BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women's tennis team will look to fight back to their winning ways Friday when they play their third Southland Conference match of the season against Southeastern Louisiana. Friday match will be the team's first league road match of the year and will open three-match road swing for the Red and White.
The Cardinals were riding their longest winning streak since the 2016-17 season but have dropped their last two matches – both coming in conference play – and currently sit 6-4 (.600) overall but 0-2 in the SLC.
LU at Southeastern Louisiana, Mar. 6, at 1 p.m.
Big Red will look to bounce back from a two-match slide when they travel to Hammond, La. Friday. The Cardinals dropped a tight match to Northwestern State last weekend, 4-3, that came right down to the wire. The Demons had to rally to win the final four games of the last remaining singles court for the victory.
The Lions are currently 5-4 (.556) on the season and 1-1 in conference play. Having lost their opening fixture against Abilene Christian, the Lions responded in resounding fashion, securing a clean sweep over UIW Sunday. The Lions are 27-15 (0.643) in singles play this season while the Cardinals are 35-25 (0.583).
The Lions have the slightly better doubles record in 2020, having posted 15 wins, while the Cardinals have recorded 13 doubles wins. This will be the 23rd time the two programs have met, with the Lions holding a slim 13-9 (.591) advantage in head-to-head matches. The two schools battled to a 4-3 decision last season with the Lions getting the upper hand.
LU at McNeese, Mar. 8, at 11 a.m.
The women's tennis version of the Battle of the Border will take place Sunday in Lake Charles, La. The Cardinals will square off against McNeese at 11 a.m. from the Nancy Hawk Tennis Center. The Cowgirls have struggled out of the gate during the 2020 season with a 2-8-1 (.227) record, have started to turn the ship around. McNeese has only lost once in its last three outings (record includes a tie against UL Monroe), including a victory over UIW. The Cowgirls are coming off a 7-0 loss at Abilene Christian. Historically, the series leans in LU's favor with the Red and White holding a 17-10 (.630) record.
