Box Score BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University men's tennis team reigns in a Wednesday afternoon battle of the birds. The Cardinals sent the Youngstown State Penguins back north to the cold with a 5-2 victory at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
The Cards came out strong in the doubles matchup. The Cardinals quickly gained the advantage with a 6-2 win at court one. With the other two sets going back and forth, the Cardinals were able to get a 7-5 victory on court three to give them the doubles point.
The Cardinals headed into the singles matches up 1-0, and they didn't waste much time getting the second point of the day. Sophomore Joshua Taylor was able to put his opponent away on court six. Taylor got the first set 6-1, and he continued the fantastic work in the second set winning 6-0.
At court one, Sophomore Axel Vila Antuna kept the Cardinals rolling. He played a tight first set, but Antuna was able to edge his opponent 7-5. He used that momentum going into the second set, where he put his opponent away 6-2.
The Cardinals needed one more point to secure the victory, and they got it on court three. Junior Nicolas Mayr gave the Cardinals their fourth point. He was able to do it in straight sets, 6-4 and 7-6. Finishing just after Mayr was Junior Carlos Paton Canal on court two. Canal gave his team their fifth point after winning in straight sets, 6-3 and 7-6.
The Cardinals dropped the final two points. However, they still came away victorious over the Penguins.
The Cardinals will be in San Antonio for their next two matches on March 28 and 29. First, the Cards will battle the UIW Cardinals on Saturday, March 28 at 11 a.m. After that, the Cardinals will head next door to take on the UTSA Roadrunners on Sunday, March 29 at 11 a.m.
