Cardinals Return Home for Doubleheader

| By:
BEAUMONT, Texas- The Lamar University men's tennis team (0-5) will look to secure their first victory of the 2020 season when they host Alcorn State and UT Arlington over this coming weekend. Big Red enters the weekend looking to bounce back from a 4-1 setback a week ago at Southern Mississippi.

LU vs Alcorn State, Feb 7, at 10 a.m. & 2 p.m.

The Cardinals will open the weekend's matches with a doubleheader Saturday against Alcorn State. The Braves have also stumbled out of the gate and are 1-7 on the season, having recently lost to Nicholls (6-1) and Jacksonville State (7-0). The Red and White will look to emulate previous performances over Alcorn State which has seen them post a perfect 17-0 all-time record head-to-head. The last time the two programs met in 2018, the Cardinals cruised to a 6-1 victory.

LU vs UT Arlington, Feb 9, at 11 a.m.

The third match in three days will see the Cardinals face off against UT Arlington. The Mavericks have jumped out of the gates quickly this season posting a 4-1 record. After dropping their season opener to Baylor the Mavs have won four straight and will face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi before facing LU.

The schools met last season in Arlington but the Mavericks got the upper hand posting a 7-0 victory, but the two schools have split their previous two meetings played in the Thompson Family Tennis Center.

Last time out:

LU vs Southern Miss., L, 4-1

Despite a strong start in doubles competition, Lamar University came up short at Southern Mississippi, 4-1. The match was closer that the final indicated as three courts went to a third set and three sets were forced to a tiebreaker. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, only one of the three-set matches finished before the overall victory was recorded.

Following the weekends action, the Cardinals will remain at home to face Oral Roberts (Friday, Feb 14) and Prairie View A&M (Feb 16, Sun). Admission to the Thompson Family Tennis Center is free.
