Cardinals Fall at the Hands of UTRGV

| By:
Box Score Edinburg, Texas – The Lamar University men's tennis team was unable to overcome a deadlock in a 5-2 loss at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Wednesday afternoon.

After a tough loss in the doubles round, the Cardinals tried to fight back in the singles matches. The Cardinals got off to a strong start in singles. At one point, the score was tied at two all, but the Cards couldn't fly away from the Vaqueros.

Sophomore Axel Vila Antuna made quick work of his opponent on court 1. He won the first set 6-1. He went on to the second set and put his opponent away with a score of 6-2. This point tied the overall score at one all.

A loss at number 6 singles put the Cards down 2-1, but Nicolas Mayr was able to tie the match back up on court 3. He battled hard to keep his team in the match winning the first set 6-2, and holding off his adversary in the second set, winning 6-3.

With the match deadlocked, each team eagerly anticipated the results of the remaining three matches which went into three sets each. On all three courts the Cardinals picked up a win in the second set to force a third but came up short on all three courts. After battling hard throughout the match, the Cardinals were unable to get another point.

Next up, the Cardinals will be traveling west to Fresno, Calif, to compete in the Pacific Coast Spring Tournament from Friday Feb. 29 through Sunday March 1.
