Cardinals Aim to Serve up Another Win

BEAUMONT, Texas - Fresh from their sweeping victory against Prairie View A&M nine days ago, the Lamar University men's tennis team (4-7) will travel south to face off against Rio Grande Valley (2-6) in Edinburg, Texas. The Cardinals enter the match against UTRGV looking for their first three-match win streak of the season after sweeping the Panthers in a doubleheader during their recent homestand.

Carlos Paton Canal leads the team mid-week clash fresh off earning Southland Conference Player of the Week accolades. Paton Canal tops the Red and White with five singles victories. Big Red will also call upon Filippo Salsini and Joshua Taylor who have each added four singles victories of their own on the young season. Paton Canal and Joshua Sundaram lead the team with six doubles wins. The Cardinals have been impressive during doubles player this season holding a 19-8 mark in those matches.
 
Scouting report:
  • UTRGV lead the all-time series over LU, 17-20, in a rivalry that dates back to the 1993 season.
  • LU won last season's matchup 4-3 in Beaumont.
  • A victory this weekend against UTRGV will see the Cardinals level the series in Edinburg at 5-5.

Lamar University was dominant in their previous outing, where they etched their third and fourth victories of the season sweeping a doubleheader against Prairie View A&M at the Thompson Family Tennis Center. Big Red won the opening match, 7-0, and returned for the second match to post a 4-0 victory.
 
The Cardinals will remain on the road for their next contest when they participate in the Pacific Coast Spring Tournament which runs from Feb. 29- Mar. 1 in Fresno, Calif. Big Red will return home on Mar. 3 when they host Valparaiso. The match is slated to begin at 2 p.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
