LU Lands Top Spot on SportsCenter’s Top 10

BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University nabbed the top spot on ESPN SportsCenter's Top 10 plays Wednesday evening when Davion Buster sunk the game-winning shot from 40 feet away as the buzzer sounded, to defeat UL Monroe on the road, 63-60. Adding an element of flair, Buster hit the shot with a defender in his face.

In addition to the thrilling victory, the Cardinals trailed by as many as 13 points in the second half and as many as 12 with less than nine minute to play. The buzzer-beater also propelled Big Red to its first victory of the season in Buster's first game of the year.

Just moments earlier, Buster gave the Cardinals their first lead of the second half when he buried a three from the corner as time was winding down on the shot clock, but ULM responded with a basket with eight seconds remaining to setup the eventual LU highlight.

"What most people don't know about Davion is he takes that shot, and from even further back, everyday before practice and makes them," said LU head coach Tic Price. "I'm sure it was thrilling for fans, and may have come as a shock to some during the game, but none of his teammates were surprised because we see him do it every day. He's just that type of shooter."

It's not the first time LU athletics has found itself on the SportsCenter Top 10. Just two years ago the Cardinal football team landed on the highlight real by blocking a potential game-winning field goal only to recover the loose ball and return it 66 yards for the score, and the win, with no time on the clock. That play sparked a win streak that ended with LU making their first trip to the NCAA FCS Playoffs.

The Cardinals return to action Tuesday, Dec. 15, when they host Southern Mississippi. The game is slated to tip off at 7 p.m. from the Montagne Center. It will serve as the home opener for the Cardinals who are playing eight of their first nine on the road.
