Correa Named to NCAA Top Hitters List

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Joining just three other current Southland Conference bats on the list, Lamar University's JC Correa was named to the NCAA and D1Baseball Top 150 hitters list, as announced by the NCAA on Thursday. Correa ranks 126th in the nation, joining Sam Houston State's Colton Cowser, Incarnate Word's Ryan Flores, and Northwestern State's Tyler Smith on the list.

The rankings compiled by D1Baseball compared plate discipline, hit ability, and game power as the three categories determining the Top 150 hitters list. Plate Discipline "is a measure of how well a batter controls the strike zone." Hit Ability "simply measures a batter's ability to hit and reach base." Game Power "is straightforward: Does the prospect produce extra-base hits, getting to the power he may show in batting practice?"

D1Baseball adjusted for park effects and pitcher-friendly parks, and for strength of schedule. Only the 2019 season was considered for the rankings, and positions, age, athleticism, swing mechanics, bat speed, running speed, defense, and throwing tools were not included in the determination of the 150. Players were graded on a scale of 0-100.

Correa scored an 82.7 in plate discipline, a "76.3" in hit ability, and "72.9" in game power for an overall score of 81.0. He ranked higher than batters from baseball powerhouses TCU, North Carolina, Pepperdine, West Virginia, Arkansas, Tulane, Baylor, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, FGCU, and Georgia, as well as Smith at Northwestern State.

Taylor Smith, formerly of UIW and currently playing for Grayson Community College, ranked 24th overall. SHSU's Cowser ranked 31st, UIW's Flores came in 43rd, and NSU's Smith ranked 146th.

The 2020 season begins on Friday, Feb. 14, when the University of Rhode Island comes to Vincent-Beck Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
