In the 12th year of the
Scott Malone (286-329-2 overall, 161-186 SLC) era, A&M-Corpus Christi is having perhaps its best year under his guidance with a 24-14 overall mark and a 10-5 record in SLC play. The Islanders split a series with UT-Arlington, swept Eastern Michigan and Ohio State, took two of three from Incarnate Word and Abilene Christian, swept Central Arkansas, and took two of three from Houston Baptist.
The Islanders lead the SLC and are fifth in the nation in batting average with a .319 mark. Their 71 doubles and 13 triples also led the conference, but A&M-Corpus Christi has just 13 homers this year, 11th in the SLC. The offense has scored 240 runs this year, averaging 6.7 runs a game.
Pitching has been a bit of a concern for the Islanders with a 5.18 ERA, eighth in the SLC. They average 8.97 hits allowed per nine innings while striking out 8.4 per inning and have a 1.75 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Enrique Sanchez (.383 batting average) and
Itchy Burts (.368 batting average) both rank near the top of the SLC in batting average while tying for fourth in doubles with 11 apiece. Sanchez has a conference-leading 57 hits with Burts trailing by just one hit at 56, and
Nick Anderson (45) and
Mike Williams (43) each already have over 40 hits as well. Sanchez has a league-leading 32 runs and sixth-place 30 RBIs as well.
Probable starters for TAMU-CC include RHP
Dustin Lacaze, RHP
Mason Hopkins, and RHP
Leo Perez. Lacaze has eight starts this year and a 3-1 record with a 2.81 ERA. He's pitched an astouding 51.1 innings. Hopkins has a 3-1 record with a 3.78 ERA and Perez is 1-0 this year with a 5.15 ERA.
Cody LeCompte and
David Worrell could both make appearances this weekend as they each have 15 appearances so far.
Lamar Quick Hits
- Logan Berlof has been Lamar's best bat in the last 10 games. He has 15 of his 24 hits on the year in the last 10 games and is hitting at a .405 clip. He's scored nine runs and driven in another seven during that time with four walks, a hit-by-pitch, and five strikeouts. He's riding a six-game hit streak and a six-game reached-base streak and was the first honorable mention in this week's Southland Conference Hitter of the Week award.
Â
- Robin Adames needs just 26 more hits to capture the LU career record. He has 231 entering Friday's game. He also needs just 48 RBIs for the career RBI record and 15 more homers for the career home run record.
Â
- JC Correa has wowed at short and at the plate. The junior transfer from Alvin Community College has a .280 batting average, fourth on the team, and leads the team in RBIs with 22. In his last 10 games he has 10 RBIs with 14 hits. He's homered three times and is the toughest on the team to strike out with just one strikeout every 9.4 at-bats. That ranks sixth in the Southland Conference and 117th in the NCAA.
Â
- Avery George is fourth in the Southland Conference and 88th in the NCAA this year with 45 hits so far. He was riding a 20-game hit streak from Feb. 16 through March 22 and tied the school record for the reached-base streak at 32 games.
