THE LAST TIME OUT - CARDINAL CLASSIC
The baseball gods just weren't withÂ
Lamar University Friday in its game against Central Michigan University. The Cards collected eight hits offensively but bad hops into double plays limited that to just two runs, and even though LU's pitchers struck out 11 while allowing just five hits, three unearned runs scored for CMU. In the end the Chippewas escaped with a 4-2 win over the Cards at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
Trailing or tied until the final pitch of the game, Lamar University's baseball team overcame the odds Saturday night at Vincent-Beck StadiumÂ
to score a walk-off win over the Panthers of Prairie View A&M. The Cards trailed 6-1 heading into the final inning and used five hits and three walks to score six in the ninth, winning the game 7-6.
Lamar University collected 16 hits and struck out 11, but double plays and walks limited the impact on both sides of the ball as Big RedÂ
ultimately fell 10-6 to Central Michigan on Sunday.
Forecasted thunderstorms in the Golden Triangle area canceled Tuesday's game between Lamar and the University of Houston. No makeup date has been set at this time.

BYU has been away from the friendly confines of their home stadium, Larry H. Miller Park, since Opening Day and hold a 5-2 record on the road. Its most recent road trip was to Corpus Christi, Texas, where BYU went 3-0 against A&M-Corpus Christi (6-2), Ohio State (5-1), and Oral Roberts (8-3) in the Kleberg Bank College Classic.
The Cougars are coached by
Mike Littlewood, an alum of BYU, who holds a 184-145 record in seven seasons at his alma mater and a 363-260 record as a head coach.
The Cards and Cougars have each won one game in the all-time series between the two programs with both meetings coming in the 1979 NCAA postseason. The Cards captured the first game of the Austin Regional 3-2 before BYU got revenge in the double-elimination game 7-4.
Noah Hill paces the team at the plate with a .435 batting average and has been especially dangerous in the last three games with a .600 average - six hits with one RBI and one run scored.
Jackson Cluff is hitting .333 with 10 RBIs, six runs, and three walks this season, and
Brock Hale, a preseason All-WCC outfielder, is also hitting .333 with nine hits, eight runs scored, four RBIs, and four walks. Hill, Cluff,
Mitch McIntyre,
Brian Hsu, and
Carson Matthews all hit .300 or better in the Kleberg tourney.
Starting pitchers for BYU are
Jordan Wood,
Jarod Lessar, and
Justin Sterner. Wood has been a consistent starter with a 3.27 ERA through 11 innings of work. He's allowed nine hits and just four earned runs but is prone to walks with five on the year. His 10 strikeouts mitigate the walk factor, and opponents are hitting .237 against him. Lessar and Sterner have split time as starters and relievers. In six of BYU's seven games this season the Cougar bullpen has been lights out with no runs allowed, 24 strikeouts, just 10 hits, and six walks in 25.1 innings.
Easton Walker, a sophomore, has allowed no runs and just one hit in 9.0 innings of relief.
Lamar Quick Hits
- Lamar has four triples in eight games this season after collecting just three in all of 2018 and four in all of 2017. If the Cards continue to average a triple every two games they'll finish the year with 28, a new program record.
- Homers have been a big part of LU's offense this season with an average of one per game. Last season LU hit just 12 all year - an average of one homer every 4.67 games. The Cards need just four more homers this year to match last year's total. If the Cards hold their one per game average that would rank seventh all-time.
- After not appearing in any of the first four games of the season, Reese Durand has forced his way into the starting lineup. He came into the final game at Tulane in the ninth inning and got a hit in his only at-bat, a triple. He then went 6-for-10 in the Cardinal Classic with a run and an RBI while not striking out a single time.
- Avery George has started every game this season and is hitting extremely well with a .385 batting average. He's collected 10 hits with three RBIs and six runs scored and he's drawn seven walks while striking out just five times. The sophomore from Humble, Texas, has reached base in 18 consecutive games dating back to last season and is also riding a seven-game hit streak.
- Cole Coker (.379, 11-for-29), Robin Adames (.323, 10-for-31), Durand (.636, 7-for-11), and George (.385, 10-for-26) are all hitting well over .300 for Lamar and Anthony Quirion (.296, 8-for-27) and Chase Kemp (.286, 4-for-14) are just below that mark and trending upward.
- Adames came into the season with 195 career hits, just 62 hits away from breaking the Lamar University career hits record. The senior from The Bronx, N.Y., has averaged 65 hits a season in his three previous years at LU and has 10 so far this year, leaving him just 52 hits away.
