BEAUMONT, Texas – Just 24 hours after returning from a four-day three-match road trip, the Lamar University tennis team is hitting the road for another date against a tough opponent. The Cardinals will be in College Station, Texas Tuesday to take on the Texas A&M Aggies.
The Cardinals (2-8) are looking to bounce back from a tough weekend that saw them drop matches against UT-Arlington, Valparaiso, and Oral Roberts. The third contest of the stretch – ORU – was one of the more heartbreaking contests in program history. The Cardinals were defeated 4-1 by the former Southland Conference foe, but the match was closer than the final score indicated. Of the six singles matches, five went to a third set but LU came up just short in all five matches (LU won the lone straight-sets match). Prior to the start of singles competition, the Cardinals were forced to a tiebreaker on two of the three courts dropping both matches (LU recorded a 6-3 decision on court No. 3).
Tuesday's task will not be an easy one as LU will be squaring off against one of the top teams in the SEC. Texas A&M is an opponent LU is familiar with having faced the Aggies in the opening round of the 2018 NCAA Championships – which was LU's third consecutive trip to the national tournament.
The Aggies enter the midweek match with a 4-3 overall record and have bookended the past five matches with wins. The Aggies opened that stretch with a 4-1 victory over Western Michigan, and defeated Arizona State, 5-2, Friday. In between those two wins were setbacks to Texas Tech and nationally ranked Virginia and Notre Dame.
Tuesday's match is slated to begin at noon from the Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station.
