Santibanez advances at ITA All-American

TULSA, Okla. – Lamar University's Sebastian Santibanez won both of his matches Saturday at the ITA All-America Championships.

Santibanez, competing in the pre-qualifying bracket, earned a hard-fought 7-5, 7-6 (4) win over Alberto Caceras of Temple in his first match before defeating Mason Bridegan of Oklahoma 7-5, 6-1.

"Sebastian did a great job battling some first-round nerves," LU coach Scott Shankles said. "He closed out his first match nicely in the tiebreaker by getting ahead early.  Then he followed up with another win by sticking to his game.

"His experience and maturity were the factors in winning his second match. It was a very good day for Sebastian."

Meanwhile, LU's Benny Schweizer suffered a 6-1, 6-2 loss to UC Irvine's Luis Lopez in the first round of the pre-qualifying bracket.

"Benny came up against a flawless competitor," Shankles said. "I think Lopez had maybe five errors the whole match. Benny didn't play that well, but Lopez didn't allow him to either."

The tournament runs through Oct. 9 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa.
