John posts third-best 10K time LU history

WACO, Texas – Jannika John posted the second-best time in Lamar University history in the women's 10,000-meters and led the Cardinals from Stanford's Cardinal Classic when LU track and field competed in the third-to-last weekend of the 2017 outdoor campaign.

John and Evelyn Chavez were the only two Cardinals at Stanford. The rest of the team stayed in Texas and went to Baylor to compete in the Michael Johnson Invitational.

John recorded her personal best time of 34:55.31 in the 10k, which follows only Midde Hamrin's time of 33:10.11 set in 1980 and Leigh Lattimore's 34:19.82 mark from 2014. Her previous time led the league, so the senior will keep hold of the best time in the conference.

Chavez followed John with a 36:08.47 time, which was fifth at the meet.

At Baylor, Thai Williams and Deja Phillips put up high marks in the women's long jump. Williams won the event with her second-best mark of 19 feet, 11 ¾ inches, and Phillips followed behind just off the medal stand in fourth at 19 feet, 3 ½ inches. Williams went on to notch another top 10 finish in the women's triple jump with a leap of  38 feet, 8 ¾ inches.

Chanissey Fowler led the way for the Cardinals in the women's 100 with a 13th-place finish on an 11.85 time. Three Cardinals claimed personal bests in that event, Erin Derrow (12.16), Janay Stanton (12.18) and Bianca Allen (12.55). In the women's 200, Stanton was 15th with a time of 25.04. Derrow ran a mark of 25.50.

Meagan Menifee and Kyara Levi both notched bests in an LU uniform in the women's 100-meter hurdles. Menifee was 24th with a 14.66 time, followed by Levi's 14.94 time.

Alexandra Sokolova was 12th on a 2:15.46 time in the women's 800 meters, and on the men's side Nathan Gillis was 15th (1:55.05) and TaMar Hicks was 19th (1:56.18).

On the men's side of the jumps, Tylen Guidry was fifth in the triple on a 47 feet, 8 ½ inches mark, just ahead of Brian O'Bonna's sixth place 47 feet, ¼ inch leap. Adam Richard was 11th in the long jump at 21 feet, 3 ½ inches mark. Cameron Dickey was just behind in 12th at 21 feet and Weston Floyd finished 16th with a jump of 20 feet, 3 ¾ inches mark.

In the women's 5,000-meters, both Evie Reavis and Erika DeWitt notched personal bests. Reavis ran the race in 18:48.89 and DewWitt did in 19:44.63. Meghan DuPree raced in the event in 18:52.10.

The Cardinals have just two more meets before they head to the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships. Their next meet is the Leon Johnson Invitational, hosted by league rival Northwestern State at the Walter P. Ledet Track Complex.
