LU Wins Three Titles on Final Day of Fall

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University men's tennis team closed out the fall season with an exclamation point at the Ron Wesbrooks Invitational. The Cardinals won three singles titles and a doubles title on the final day of their lone home tournament of the fall.

The Cardinals were 30-13 (.698) for the weekend after posting a 7-4 (.636) doubles record and a 23-9 (.719) mark in singles matches.

"I'm very pleased with our results from the weekend," said LU head coach Scott Shankles. "We had some good competition here this weekend. When you consider that we posted a strong record in both singles and doubles against the talent we faced, we definitely closed the fall season strong."

Big Red won the flight two doubles title and followed that up with individual titles at Nos. 2, 3 and 4 singles.

The Cardinals got out to a quick start in doubles play in the second flight. The team of freshmen Carlos Paton and Roy Stepanov overwhelmed Karl Mosterd and Adolfo Arroyo in the flight two doubles championship. The Cards' rookie duo posted a 6-2 score for the title. The Cardinals also got a doubles victory from senior Logan Powell and Arthur Serafim in the flight one doubles third-place match.

Powell recorded the team's first singles title in flight two. Powell squared off against Rice's Jacob Eskeland and had to go the distance to get the win. Powell received a wakeup call in the first set dropping a 6-0 setback. The shutout was enough to push Powell across the line in the second set recording a 7-6 (7-3) victory to force a super tiebreak. Again, the two foes battled point-for-point until Powell edged Eskleland, 11-9, in the third for the title.

Junior Lukas Grubelnig was in a similar situation forced to go to a third set before claiming the title. Just like Powell, Grubelnig lost his opening set. The junior battled back in the final two sets to defeat UTSA's Leon Hein, 4-6, 6-3, 10-7.

There was far less drama in the flight three championship as Serafim dispensed of teammate Paton. Serafim got the upper hand in the opening set with a 6-2 victory and closed out the match with a 6-0 decision in the second.

The Ron Wesbrooks Invitational concludes the fall season for the Cardinals. LU will open the spring season Sunday, Jan. 14th with a doubleheader in Stillwater, Okla. The Cardinals will open the season against Bryant and follow that up with a match against Oklahoma State.
