Men's Tennis Preps for Two in Nebraska
BEAUMONT, Texas – Fresh off its thrilling 4-2 victory over No. 47 Iowa, the Lamar University men's tennis team (7-4/.636) will make a quick turnaround to take on the University of Omaha and Nebraska Tuesday afternoon. The road matches will mark the team's third and four competitions in a 49-hour timespan. The match against Omaha will take place at 10 a.m. The Cards will then hop on the bus and make the short trip to Lincoln for a 4 p.m. contest against the Cornhuskers.
"That is the nature of college athletics," said head coach
Scott Shankles. "Win or lose you have to put the last match behind you and move on to the next. We've played several tough opponents away from home this season, and these two matches will be just as tough."
The Cardinals have won two of their last three matches, and six of their last eight coming into the match against Omaha. Big Red is riding a wave of moment as it prepares to face the Mavericks. LU posted a 4-2 decision over the nation's 47
th-ranked team last time out. The success didn't just stop with the team's upset of Iowa. In the first match of the doubleheader, the Cards duo of
Michael Feucht and
Benny Schweizer defeated the nation's ninth-ranked team of Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe. LU dominated Oklahoma State's top duo posting a 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles.
The Mavericks come into the week looking to right the ship. Omaha is 5-9 (.357) on the season, but has shown signs recently of turning things around. The Mavericks have won two of their last three matches, but are coming off a 7-0 decision against Illinois-Chicago.
The match against Omaha is slated to begin at 10 a.m., and will take place at the Miracle Hill Tennis Center.
Following the match, LU will head over to Lincoln for a showdown against Big 10 foe, Nebraska. The Huskers have an identical 7-4 (.636) record to LU, and have won four of their last five matches. The two schools share one common foe – Iowa – who Nebraska defeated, 4-3, on Friday. The Huskers have already defeated Big Red's next opponent twice this season by a combined 13-1 score. Tuesday's match against the Huskers will begin at 4 p.m. from the Dillon Tennis Center.
Following Tuesday's second consecutive doubleheader, the Cardinals will have 10 days to prepare for the start of Southland Conference play. LU opens league play March 25 against Nicholls. The match against the Colonels will begin at 9 a.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
