BEAUMONT, Texas – After an impressive win over Arkansas State, the Lamar University women's tennis team will look to make it three in a row Saturday when they travel to Ruston, La., to take on Louisiana Tech. The Cardinals are 2-1 (.667) on the season, and have rattled off consecutive wins after a season-opening setback at nationally ranked Rice.
LU will be taking on a Lady Techsters team that is 7-2 (.778) on the season and riding a three-game win streak. Louisiana Tech has won seven of its last eight contests heading into Saturday's match against the Red and White. The Lady Techsters have been winning their matches in impressive fashion outscoring their last three opponents, 18-1.
The Lady Techsters have faced several opponents that LU will face later this season. Through nine matches, Tech has faced five Southland Conference schools posting wins over four of them with the lone setback coming at Nicholls, 4-3.
Saturday's meeting will be the first matchup between the two teams since 2014. That year LU dropped a 6-1 decision in Beaumont.
Big Red has four players each with two singles wins through three matches on the season –
Stephanie Marchena,
Talissa Merchiers,
Anna Spengler and
Teodora Stefanovic. Numerous Cardinals also have recorded two doubles wins on the season.
Saturday's contest will serve as the team's final warmup before opening Southland Conference play. The Cardinals will open up league play with home matches against New Orleans (Feb. 27) and Southeastern Louisiana (Feb. 28) before hitting the road to take on Nicholls and McNeese State.
Saturday's match is slated for noon start from Ruston, La.
