BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University's bid for a third-straight Southland Conference victory came up just short Monday afternoon as the Cardinals dropped a 5-2 decision to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
The Islanders jumped on the gas early taking the matches on all three doubles courts for the early 1-0 lead. A&M-Corpus Christi made it a 3-0 lead, but the Cardinals were trying to fight their way back into the match on courts 1 and 2. Sophomore
Arina Gudovskaya got the best of Leticia Tarocco defeating the Islanders' top player, 6-4, 6-3.
Sophomore
Luana Paiva followed suit moments later with a straight-sets victory over her own on court 2. Paiva defeated Yana Mykytyn, 6-3, 6-4.
Unfortunately for Big Red, Lamar could get no closer as A&M-Corpus Christi closed out the day with consecutive victories.
The Cardinals now hit the road for a crucial three-match stretch to close out the season beginning Saturday at Stephen F. Austin. The match against the Ladyjacks will begin at 1 p.m.
