LAFAYETTE, La. – Lamar University's
Katya Lapayeva and
Stephanie Marchena both lost in the finals of the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette's Culotta Tennis Center on Saturday.
Lapayeva saw her title hopes dashed as she dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision to Tiffany Mylonas of Louisiana-Monroe in the No. 1 singles draw. Marchena, competing in No. 6 singles, dropped the first set to India Shiaelies of the host Ragin' Cajuns in the first set before being forced to retire while trailing 5-2 in the second set.
LU's Jasmin Buchta finished third in No. 3 singles by posting a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Anna Segara of New Orleans.
In doubles competition, Lapayeva and Buchta combined to finish third in the No. 2 draw with a 6-3 win over Nadja Manjon and Alba Escalona Perny of Louisiana Tech. It was some redemption for Lapayeva and Buchta, who lost a hard-fought 7-5 decision to Trang Dao and Brittany Johnson of New Orleans in the semifinals earlier in the day.
The Cardinals return to action when they compete at the West Florida Invitational, set for Oct. 14-16 in Pensacola, Fla.
