Final Stats

BEAUMONT - Seems to be the story of Chase Angelle's season, fantastic pitching performance but took the loss with a run or less of support. On Friday, in his last performance at Vincent-Beck, the senior took the loss for the Lamar baseball team in a shutout by Stephen F. Austin in Southland Conference baseball action.

Angelle (5-6) has a 2.17 earned run average in 2015, and gave Lamar (19-29, 8-17 Southland Conference) 7.2 innings of work with one run allowed on five hits and two walks. The southpaw was only two strikeouts away (8) from tying a career-high in the category.

He struck out the side with a walk in the middle in the first inning and sat down the Lumberjacks (16-33, 10-17) 1-2-3 in the second frame. He worked another perfect inning in the sixth, but ran into trouble on a one-out walk in the eighth.

The walk was issued to Conner Fikes, who stole second base, with Nick Ramos at the plate. Ramos ran a chopper up the middle that LU shortstop Stijn van der Meer was able to corral in shallow center field. Fikes took off on the hit and was rounding third when van der Meer threw to third, not seeing the runner was past it.

Derek Wade relieved Angelle in the eighth and pitched a full inning with just two walks allowed. Brandon Kirkham threw one pitch in the ninth, but was done when catcher Brandon Provost chopped down Brandon Smith on an attempt to steal third.

Angelle's counterpart Cameron Gann (4-3) pitched a complete game and allowed only four hits in the contest. He tossed 124 pitches with three walks and eight strikeouts.

The Cardinals left nine runners stranded on the night. Two men reached in the second inning with one out, but a foul pop and strikeout ended that threat. The bases were loaded in the fourth, but a strikeout also killed that chance.

In the ninth inning, pinch hitter Cutter McDowell worked a nine-pitch at-bat, but ended up striking out with the tying run in Joe Arechiga at second base and ended the game.

Lamar will honor 12 seniors on Saturday, at 1:45, for Senior Day festivities. First pitch of that game is slated for 2 o'clock and the finale is scheduled for Sunday at 1:00. For Sunday's game, all mothers in attendance will receive free entry into the game, as well as any youth in a team jersey.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi fell to Incarnate Word 6-1 on Friday, which kept Lamar only three games back of the final spot in the Southland Conference Tournament.
