Lamar Tennis Drops Tough Match to Nationally Ranked Foe

April 7, 2015

Final Stats

The Lamar men's tennis team gave the nation's 53rd-ranked team all it could handle, but Texas A&M-Corpus Christi rallied for the 5-2 decision Tuesday evening in Corpus Christi. The loss drops Lamar to .500 on the season (10-10), and 1-1 in Southland Conference play, while the Islanders move to 3-0 in league play.

The Cardinals got out to an impressive start winning the doubles point. The team of Michael Feucht and Benny Schweizer dispensed of A&M-Corpus Christi's Guillaume Rauseo and Kevin Bettendroffer, 8-4. They were quickly followed off the court by teammates Jeandre Hoogenboezem and Nikita Lis who notched an 8-6 decision to lock up the point.

Due to Big Red's two quick victories at the top of the doubles ladder, the two teams agreed to end the doubles match on the third court. The match at No. 3 doubles had LU's Juuso Laitinen and Mikko Rajamaki down only a point, 6-5, when it was called.

Unfortunately, Lamar was unable to carry that momentum into the singles competition, as the Islanders rattled off five consecutive wins before Lamar dented the scoreboard again.

A&M-Corpus Christi's Javier Pujol got the Islanders on the scoreboard with his straight-sets victory over Steven McMillan, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 5 singles. Bettendroffer followed suit with a 6-2, 6-0, win over Feucht at No. 2 singles.

Leading 3-1, the Islanders wrapped up the team victory with a 6-2, 6-0, decision at No. 6 singles, but before the Islanders got the win, they needed their top player to get a win at the No. 1 spot. Similar to the battle Lamar was facing as a team - looking to record the upset - Lis was locked in an individual battle trying to record an upset over A&M-Corpus Christi's Peter Nagy who entered the day ranked 90th overall. Lis battled hard before bowing out, 6-2, 6-2.

Lamar closed out the scoring with a victory at No. 4. Benny Schweizer outdueled the Islanders' Rauseo in three sets. Schweizer took the opening set 6-4, before dropping the second set by the identical tally. Schweizer was able to bounce back in the super tiebreak posting a 10-8 decision for the win.

The Cardinals return to action Sunday when they travel to Abilene, Texas to take on Abilene Christian. The match against the Wildcats is slated to begin at noon.
