Cardinals claim second seed with 6-1 win

BEAUMONT - For the first time since 1982, the Lamar men's tennis team finished second in the Southland Conference standings when the Cardinals downed New Orleans 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Thompson Family Tennis Center on Senior Day.

Mikko Rajamaki, Lamar's (13-10, 4-1 Southland Conference) lone senior, was honored in pregame festivities, and then hit the courts and led the Cardinals with wins on singles and doubles courts. UNO fell to 10-10 overall and 3-2 in league action.

The win set up a rematch with UNO on Saturday at 2 o'clock at the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center in the Southland Conference Tournament, hosted by Lamar. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi claimed the one seed, UNO the three seed and Nicholls the four seed.

Rajamaki defeated Romain Lefevre in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 on line five and improved his season's solo record to 8-6 on the season. He and Juuso Laitinen took down Christoffer Appelgre and Giacomo Adoncecchi on No. 3 doubles, 8-3, to contribute to the doubles point.

Jeandre Hoogenboezem and Nikita Lis locked up the doubles point on court one with an 8-4 win against Timo Kranz and Lefevre. That team remained perfect on the year at 10-0, and Lis as an individual is 17-0 in doubles action.

Lis defeated Kranz in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5, on singles No. 1 and improved his solo record to 13-8 for the year. Michael Feucht claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win against Gonzalo Garcia on No. 2. The sophomore improved his singles mark to 15-7 and has won his last three contests.

Benny Schweizer won his fifth in a row on a 6-4, 6-3 victory from the fourth position over Blake Gregor. He notched his 15th singles win on the year. Juuso Laitinen battled back from a 6-2 set one loss to Giacomo Adoncecchi, and won the last two sets 6-2, 7-6 on line six.

Hoogenboezem lost to Rui Silva on court three, 6-1, 4-6, 11-9. In doubles, Silva and Gregor defeated Schweizer and Feucht, 8-2.

Lamar finished the regular season with three-straight wins and four victories in the last five.
