Lamar offensive outburst sweeps New Orleans

Box Score March 21, 2015

Final Stats

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Behind Mason Salzar and Kevin Sanatna's five runs batted in apiece, the Lamar baseball team outscored New Orleans 22-6 to sweep Saturday's doubleheader, 5-4 and 17-2, and the three-game series at Maestri Field in Southland Conference action. It was LU's first league series win and sweep of the season.

Lamar, now on a four-game win streak, improved to 11-12 overall and 3-6 in league play while UNO dropped to 8-15 overall and 2-7 in SLC action.

Two insurance runs in the seventh inning proved to be a huge in the first game of the doubleheader. The Privateers scored two in the bottom of the ninth, but it was not enough to tie the contest and force extra innings.

Up 3-2 after six innings, Stijn van der Meer, who reached on a fielder's choice, scored from third base on a wild pitch that was ball four to Brandon Provost. Van der Meer stole second base and reached third on a wild pitch.

Provost made it 5-2 when he scored on Jake Nash's double to left field.

UNO's two runs in the ninth inning was on a two-run shot to right field from Dane Landry that scored Matt Rykacze, who reached on a single to right field.

Lamar struck first with three runs in the second inning. Kevin Santana led off the inning with a single to left field and took third on Reed Seeley's single through the right side. Santana was chopped down at home play on a fielder's choice from Kyle Markum.

Seeley scored on a single through the right side from Brendan Satran that pushed Markum to second base. Mason Salazar put down a sacrifice bunt that the third baseman threw past first base and that allowed Markum to score and Satran, who later scored on a wild pitch, to reach third base.

Jonathan Santana knocked in two runs in the bottom of the sixth frame to cut the Privateers' deficit to 3-2. He scored Hezekiah Randolph and Preston Marsh.

Since Sunday's game was moved up for the doubleheader, right-hander Danny Fernandez (3-2) got the start and the win in game one. He pitched six innings and allowed two runs on six hits and three walks. The senior stuck out four.

Derek Wade relieved him and finished the game with two runs allowed on three hits, and also struck out four.

UNO's Jordan Priddle worked 6.1 innings and allowed four runs, two earned, on six hits and two walks. Just like Friday's contest, UNO had to go through two relievers to retire the Cardinals. Seth Laigast pitched two-thirds of an inning and allowed one run on a hit and walk. Mitchell Cohen finished the contest with a scoreless two innings.

The second game was scoreless through the third inning, but LU used the middle innings to run away with the contest. Markum scorched a one-out dinger over the left center wall for his first home run of the season in the fourth inning. Van der Meer singled to center field after a Salazar single and Justin Eckols walk. Salazar scored on van der Meer's single.

New Orleans responded with a run in the bottom of the frame when Jonathon Coco scored on Sam Carriere's single to right field.

Markum added his second run batted in of the contest with a double to left field in the fifth that scored Santana, who reached on a one-out single. Seeley, who singled right after Santana, scored from third base on a wild pitch.

Salazar deposited his first career home run into left field and scored Markum to make it 6-1.

Lamar made it 9-1 after its half of the sixth inning. With two on and two out, Seeley double to left field and scored van der Meer, who led off the inning with a walk. Markum logged his third and fourth RBI of the game on a double to right center that scored Jake Nash and Seeley.

UNO's gut punch was in the seventh inning when Lamar scored eight runs to make it 17-2. Van der Meer scored Eckols, walk, and Salazar, single, on a double to left center. Santana hit his third home run of the season to make it 14-2, and scored Nash and Arechiga. Salazar pushed it to 17-2 with his second home run of the game and career that scored Seeley and Satran, both reached on a walk.

Both Markum and Salazar set career highs for RBI in a game in the second contest, and Salazar set a new career high for runs in a game.

Lamar started freshman righty Eric Foshee, who lasted 3.1 inning and gave up one run on five hits. He struck out five batters. Since the Cardinals only used one reliever through the first two games, they had liberty to get staff work in.

Galen Andrews (2-1) took the win and allowed one run on five hits in 1.2 innings pitched, and both Joe Farley and Collin Chapman worked one scoreless inning.

Each one of New Orleans' pitchers gave up at least four runs. It started with Daniel Martinez who allowed four runs on nine this and a walk in 4.1 innings. Darron McKigney worked 1.2 innings and gave up five runs on five hits and a walk.

Keaton Brewer allowed four runs without recording an out, and Hunter Medine allowed four runs in one inning pitched.

The contest marked the most runs this season and most since March 12 of last year against Prairie View A&M (18). It was LU's largest margin of victory since the Cards beat Southeastern Louisiana in 2013, and it was the first league sweep since New Orleans of last season.

LU finishes its nine-game road swing on Tuesday at 6:30 when it faces nationally-ranked Houston before a non-conference three-game set with Abilene Christian.
