SAN ANTONIO – Sam Bumpers may have been held without a hit for the first time since March 8, but he was still able to score the eventual winning run on Wednesday as the Lamar baseball team beat UTSA 3-2 at Roadrunner Field.
A senior out Bourbonnais, Ill., Bumpers had recorded at least one hit in each of the last 28 games, including a national headline-grabbing 7-for-7 outing with three home runs vs. McNeese last month. The shortstop hit .430 over the course of the streak, knocking in 22 runs and scoring 28 times with team-best totals in both slugging (.645) and on-base percentage (.478).
On Wednesday, Bumpers went 0-for-5. Both Jude Vidrine and Kyle Markum each had two-hit days, and the Cardinals (28-17) were out-hit 10-7.
A pair of walks from both Reed Seeley and Jacoby Middleton combined with a fielding error by Roadrunner third baseman R.J. Perucki allowed LU to fire the opening salvo in the first inning.
Brent Janak, who was making just his third appearance this month, made the run loom large over his three innings of work, allowing just two hits before ceding the mound to J.T. Autrey in the fourth.
Vidrine earned a two-out bases-loaded walk, his league-leading 40th of the season, to double LU’s advantage in the sixth.
Autrey gave up a double before surrendering the mound to Travis Moore in the ensuing half-inning. The run would later score, and Autrey was ultimately credited with the win, finishing with one run allowed on three hits over 2.1 frames. The Stephenville native improved to 6-2 on the year.
UTSA (28-18) centerfielder Jesse Baker dropped a Bumpers fly ball to lead off the seventh, and the shortstop would later score when Jake Sutton grounded into a double play to make it 3-1 as the game turned to the seventh-inning stretch.
It got a bit nervy for the Cards in the ninth as John Welborn reached on a fielder’s choice and moved to third on a stolen base and Justin Eckols throwing error before scoring on a Perucki single. However, LU closer Derek Wade was able to strike out Mike Warren in the following at-bat to bring the game to a close and earn his fourth save of the campaign.
LU will return to Vincent-Beck Stadium for a final home series this weekend, taking on Houston Baptist. The three-game set is scheduled to begin on Friday.
