NACOGDOCHES - Sam Bumpers accomplished something that no other Lamar baseball player has ever been able to match on Saturday and he wasted little time in doing so, leading the Cards to a 7-3 victory over Stephen F. Austin at Jaycees Field.

Bumpers, a senior out of Bourbonnais, Ill., singled in the opening inning on Saturday to extend his consecutive games with a hit streak out to 26 games, bettering the previous mark of 25, which was set by Erik Kanaby in the 2007 season. Bumpers went on to finish the game 2-for-5 with a triple and a pair of runs batted in.

Both Jude Vidrine and Jacoby Middleton also went 2-for-5, and Kevin Santana was 2-for-4 as the Cards out-hit the hosts 10-7.

With the win, LU improved to 25-17 and 11-9 in Southland play. With another win on Sunday, it would seal a fourth-consecutive series victory for the Cards. SFA dropped to 17-25 overall and 8-12 in the conference.

As has been the case virtually all season, Chase Angelle turned in yet another quality start on the mound for the Cards. It was his 10th in 11 starts this season, allowing six hits and three runs over 7.2 innings of work.

An Eckols infield single in the fourth and a Reed Seeley fielder's choice in the seventh gave the Cards a 2-0 advantage, but a five-run eighth made the lead insurmountable. An Eckols sacrifice fly and a wild pitch put LU up 4-0, and Vidrine followed up with a single to add another before Bumpers cleared the bags with his fourth triple of the season to make it 7-0.

The Lumberjacks fought back for three runs in the bottom half of the frame to Chase Angelle from the mound, but Derek Wade ultimately answered the call out of the bullpen to pick up the last four outs.

First pitch on Sunday is set for 10 a.m.
