Box Score

BEAUMONT – Through five innings on Friday night, Chase Angelle appeared to have the upper hand on Texas-Pan American’s Sam Street in a true pitching duel. However, the Broncs broke through for three runs in the sixth, and that proved to be enough as the Lamar baseball team fell 4-1 at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

Angelle, a native of nearby Orange, did not allow a hit through 5.1 innings and had retired nine in a row prior to giving up a single off the glove of LU third baseman Reed Seeley. The Broncs would pick up three more hits in the frame, and Angelle was handed his first loss of the season, finishing with a career-best eight strikeouts in seven innings of work.

For the Broncs (6-4), Street went the distance, allowing eight hits and a run while striking out nine. He threw 139 pitches with a 102 strikes.

The Cards (6-4) tallied the first score of the game as Kevin Santana picked up his seventh double of the year to lead off the second. A Tyler Sullivan walk and Jacoby Middleton infield single loaded the bases, and Jake Sutton grounded into a double play to score the first run.

A ninth-inning Andy Fortuna single pushed an insurance run across for UTPA, and it almost looked necessary as the Red and White attempted a late comeback. After Sutton reached on a fielder’s choice, a two-out error brought the tying run in Sam Bumpers to the plate. Unfortunately for LU, he was unsuccessful, flying out in foul territory along the right field line.

Bumpers and Middleton each finished the game with two hits, and the Cards out-hit the Broncs 8-7.

Lamar will return to action on Saturday vs. UTPA. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
