EDINBURG – Nikita Lis may have dropped his first match of the season on Friday, but the rest of the Cardinal lineup made up for it as the Lamar men’s tennis team earned a third consecutive victory, beating Texas-Pan American 4-3 at Orville Cox Tennis Center.
Lis, a freshman out of Kaliningrad, Russia, fell 6-3, 6-1 to Juan Cruz Soria at No. 1 singles. Lis had entered the day with a perfect 4-0 record.
Michael Feucht picked up a win at No. 2 singles, beating Sebastian Job 6-2, 6-3, and Jeandre Hoogenboezem doubled the point total with a 6-4, 6-5 decision over Mauricio Fosado at No. 6.
Mikko Rajamaki put the Cards within a point of clinching with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Alejandro Sanoja at the fifth spot, but it wouldn’t be easy as both Juuso Laitinen and Carl-Philip Lindqvist saw their matches go to a third set.
Laitinen wn the first 6-4, but fell 6-5 in a hard fought second before ultimately going down in the third 6-3 to Chetan Panditi. Lindqvist, on the other hand, bounced back from a 6-5 loss to Ricardo Hopker in the first to win the next two 6-3 and 6-2.
In doubles, the team of Feucht and Laitinen picked up a 6-2 win at the top spot, but Lis and Trey Crysel lost by the same score at the third. Hoogenboezem and Rajamaki lost 6-4 on the deciding second line.
The Cardinals will return to action on Saturday morning at Thompson Family Tennis Center as Prairie View A&M will roll into town for an 11 a.m. start.
