NATCHITOCHES, La. - The Lamar baseball team scored 10 runs over the final two frames on Saturday, and that proved to be more than enough as the Cardinals run-ruled a conference opponent for the third straight weekend, beating host Northwestern State 11-1 in seven innings at Brown-Stroud Field.
Lamar (29-11, 8-6 SLC) received contributions from all over the line-up as seven different Cards scored and six knocked in a run en route to out-hitting the Demons 11-4. Aaron Olivas and Sam Bumpers steered the offense, combining for four hits and six runs batted in. Olivas also scored three times, and Zach Luevanos continued his stellar play in the series with two hits and two RBI.
On the mound, Eric Harrington notched a second consecutive complete game, allowing four hits and a score while striking out five to improve to 5-1. It marked the 15th time the senior out of Groves went the distance in his career and the fourth this season.
Much like Friday night, NSU miscues played a major role in the game, beginning in the third when an error and wild pitch by Demon starter Steven Spann put Olivas 90 feet from home. Bumpers followed up with a groundout to plate the senior and put LU on top 1-0.
Spann, who didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning, was ultimately pegged with the loss, allowing three hits and five unearned runs to drop to 2-3 on the season.
After the Demons (11-29, 2-12 SLC) reclaimed the score in fifth, the Cards responded for four more runs in the sixth. V.J. Bunner got things going with a single, and a two-out error by Mitch Huckabay kept the inning alive. Olivas followed up with an infield single to put Lamar ahead once more, and a Luevanos single and Bumpers double brought three more home to stretch the advantage out to four.
Darian Johnson led off with a walk in the following frame, and doubles from Brad Picha, Bunner and Seth Dornak scored three. Autrey continued the rally with a walk, and back-to-back doubles by Olivas and Luevanos accounted for the final score.
With the win Lamar secured a third consecutive SLC series victory, and the Cards will aim for their first conference sweep of the year on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
